Bridgeport, Conn. (WTNH) - A big step forward, for some families in Bridgeport who are trying to make their homes safe from the dangers of lead paint.
Citizen's bank issued a $25,000 check as part of the News 8 Citizens Bank Champion in Action Program . Every quarter a group is picked who is really making a difference in their community. This quarter, the winner is Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust.
"We've actually been successful in re-mediating or making lead safe in about 450 units here in Bridgeport," said Elizabeth Torres the Executive Director of Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust.
That's part of their focus. The other part is getting rid of dangerous lead in Bridgeport homes and apartments. They make people aware of the problem and train people to get rid of lead. They also help homeowners and landlords get it done.
"We actively provide forgivable grants, forgivable loans to property owners that want to make their units lead safe, and that program has been extremely successful," explained Torres.
